I stare at your picture And see you in a state of happiness I remember what you taught me Time moves so fast Don’t let the days go past Keep the family fire lit; It was a time before You concealed your strength Before misery was born When did hope disappear? How did you allow fear And painful waves of misunderstanding To drown your light, Replacing your dreams with a frown, Where your sorrows Spilled over onto my days We took separate journeys Greater and far Both of us perplexed… What is right?... What is wrong? My truth?... Your truth? MY GRANDMOTHER Spectacles surround her soft blue eyes Shinny white hair frames her kind face She delights in the simple things Smelling the fresh air on a sunny day Rain touching her skin; This Saturday the sunlight streams onto Her kitchen table Grace and warmth beckon the spirits We chatter about life’s changes My dreams and struggles I ask her what makes her happy; Abruptly, Gram takes a Deep belabored breath Her face looks serious And her mood changes I notice how a A past memory fills her heart And her eyes flicker with a waking pain After a short silence, She tells me to share my spirit With my children It doesn’t matter how young they are Let them know you honor Their presents, point of view, And above all, express yourself often. Never allow an unspoken word To become remembered regrets Talk to your children As I have conversed with you. |
MY MOTHER
